There are two months left in the season and clubs are looking at strengthening key positions ahead of next season. this summer in particular promises to be the biggest transfer window in history as several of the top clubs are looking to rebuild.

One player that is said to be in the midst of a transfer war between Manchester United and Manchester City is Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez. The Spain international is understood to be the subject of attraction from both clubs looking to beef up their midfield.

It had earlier been reported by some media sources that Manchester City were front runners for the 24-year-old. However United have shown interest in the past week and this could spark a bidding war in the summer for the player.

Manchester United are in dire need for reinforcements as Ander Herrera is set to leave the club in the summer on a free to PSG. United boss Ole Gunnar Solksjaer views Saul as the ideal fit to partner Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba in the midfield next season.

The Atletico Madrid player is a unique player as he can play as an advanced midfielder or as a central midfielder. He also presses opposition well which is a key attribute of Diego Simeone’s tactics at Atletico Madrid.

It is understood that Manchester City want the player to be a replacement for aging midfielder Fernandinho in the midfield. Guardiola believes that the player’s physicality as well as his technical skills makes him a good candidate for the position.

Atletico are understood to be reluctant to sell but are in a good position as the player has a release clause of €150million. It is highly unlikely that both clubs would sanction such huge fee for the player and a lower fee could be negotiated.

Manchester City hasa history of signing excellent defensive midfielders from De Jong, Barry, Yaya Toure and Fernando, Saul could join this illustrious list in the summer.
